Mostly TV related.
- Thumbs up to Canadian Idol Finale. I will say that Rex was at his best the last performance show, but that doesn't redeem the prior lack of singing ability, so Go Melissa. Was nice to see that Melissa's favourite of the season was the song after which I started rooting for her to win (DeLovely). She's got easily the best Idol single ever - an upbeat rock song, instead of a crappy pop ballad - and that was quite likely the best Idol Finale, further cementing my feeling that CI is superior to AI. I particularly liked the tributes to Byrd and the parents, which were nice personal touches. And BNL of course rock as usual.
- Sweet Suzie's gone from Rock Star: INXS, which is sad, but if she doesn't have a solid career after this I'll be surprised. Despite the prior "bad boy" schtick, my preference goes to the final Canadian in the running, JD. And it's not just because he's Canadian... Marty's too much of a screamer, and MiG just doesn't seem to fit. JD's proven himself to be a solid musician and song-writer/arranger, and I think his general style would fit the band better than either of the others.
- So many good new shows this season. The VCR's going to get a lot of work. Thank goodness for timeshifting and multiple TVs.
- Speaking of new shows... Watched the premiere of Threshold earlier. It's former Trek Producer Brannon Braga's new venture, which I've seen compared to The X-Files in terms of quality sci-fi thriller. Combine it with Numb3rs and it looks like CBS is going to have a lock on Friday nights (minus the looks-to-be-crappy JLH show at 8).
- Bones had some pretty bad writing. I think the exact phrase "I hate psychology" was uttered by the main character at least five times in the episode... Twice in a span of about thirty seconds. But I'll still watch until Fox cans it, to see if it gets any better.
- For some reason, though I'd set both the cable box and the VCR for an hour of Reunion on Thursday, what I ended up with was half an hour of The War at Home. Somehow it didn't bother taping the Presidential Address that pre-empted Reunion. Not sure if someone just stopped it, or if there's weirdness happening with the VCR/cable. Anyway, I enjoyed Michael Rapaport on Boston Public, so I watched his new show. It almost reminded me of a live-action Family Guy. The acting isn't great, but it's outrageous comedy that should fit in quite well between The Simpsons and Seth McFarlane's two shows on Sundays.
- Kristen Bell (of Veronica Mars) is singing the theme to "Fame" on The Emmys in "Emmy Idol" (I think that's what they're calling it). And William Shatner's performing the classic Star Trek theme with an opera singer. There are a few others, but I forget. Should be interesting.
- Survivor: Stephenie's back! Holy freaking awesome. Seriously. Bobby Jon's cool too, but Stephenie! Love that girl. (Me and my reality TV girls.)
- Speaking of TV girls. Lake Bell. As much as I liked her on Boston Legal, I'm not seeing Surface doing very well for some reason.
- 4 days until Lost.
- 13 days until our Big Damn Movie. Sucks to be Jessica Alba with a looks-to-be-crappy film trying to compete on the same opening weekend. Didn't they tell you, Jessica, that You Can't Stop The Signal?
- Going to the Jays game today, then out to the bar directly afterward. Should probably get some sleep about now. |
